Instructor Training Course
SSI Instructor course on Gili Trawangan
Our curriculum, backed by SSI, focuses on developing teaching skills, dive theory knowledge, and practical teaching abilities. Our groups are small, so you will get all the support you need. In the 12 days leading up to the Instructor Exam, you will be prepared to pass with flying colours. Our professional team, led by Instructor trainer Ovan will make sure you are comfortable with every aspect of the dive industry; theory, teaching techniques, equipment, rescue skills, legal and ethical aspects.
Are you looking for a job as a dive instructor? Our former Instructor candidates have been able to land that dream job, and you will be taught how to do the same during your course. To become extra employable, you get the chance to stay with us after you get certified and follow our experienced instructors during several courses.
Here at Gili Divers we have a very active and popular Divemaster education program. With candidates always at various stages of the Divemaster course, there is always company at the same level. We have plenty of courses to assist and plenty of fun dives to guide; real hands-on experience, no role play.
Our Divemaster course has a strong emphasis on gaining real practical experience in the water in real diving situations. The diving environment around The Gili Islands has generally very good visibility and the water is warm all year around. However, it is quite dynamic and has depth. This enables divemaster candidates to gain experience with current, drift and deep dive scenarios with 30m+ visibility.
Course Details
The Ocean Quest Coral Propagation course teaches you how to propagate coral fragments in a natural and non destructive method. Our program is meticulously crafted to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of coral propagation techniques and their crucial role in marine ecosystem preservation. Whether you're an avid diver, marine enthusiast, or conservation advocate, this course offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the protection and restoration of our oceans' fragile ecosystems.
Theoretical Immersion
Ocean Quest Coral Propagation teaches students the important of corals, their biology and how hard corals produce their calcium carbonate skeleton. Once understanding how corals grow and reproduce, we can begin to explore ways to protect and help coral reefs regenerate.
Going through the equipment needed and step by step process of coral propagation ensures we can perform this activity while generating the least amount of stress possible to these fragile coral fragments.
It is also important to learn how to assess if an area is suitable for a coral propagation nursery, how to maintain and redistribute corals onto the reef.
Once you have gained all this knowledge, coral propagation can begin!
Collecting Pieces
Ocean quest believes in natural propagation, meaning coral pieces are not harvest from healthy corals. Small fragments which have been previously broken off are rescued from the reef ready for propagation. These are collected from the reef close to the nursery to protect the biodiversity and not risk introducing a new species into an area it has not naturally entered.
Pieces of coral that have broken off due to human activity or natural disasters are already in a fragile state. They are collected extremely carefully and brought to the surface slowly, remaining in a volume of water the entire time. Coral pieces are then brought to the shore, where propagation can begin!
Coral Propagation
After the theory, students will understand the biology of corals and begin to be able to identify polyps and corallites. Ocean quest coral propagation cuts the rescued pieces of corals into tiny fragments around 10 polyps or less. By cutting these pieces into tiny fragments, these corals behave like babies, putting more energy into growing faster!
Sticking these tiny coral pieces onto live rock gives them the stability they need to grow once placed into the nursery!

The Rescue Diver course program is an important step in expanding your knowledge and experience as a diver. Rescue Diver certification is also a prerequisite for all leadership programs. Physically the Rescue Diver program can be challenging so a reasonable level of fitness is desirable.
To enroll in the Rescue Diver course, you must hold a valid CPR and First Aid certification from an internationally recognized organization within the past two years. If you don't have this, we offer a package including the React Right certification, which takes an additional day. This course covers basic life support, CPR, emergency oxygen, rescue breathing, shock management, spinal injury, serious bleeding management, and basic first aid procedures.
Emergency First Response - React Right
This is a basic course for emergency care and lifesaving skills that is great for both divers and non-divers. Emergency First Response, or also referred to as React Right, focuses on building confidence in lay rescuers and increasing their willingness to respond when faced with a medical emergency.
Emergency First Response/React Right course meets the CPR and first aid training requirements for the Rescue Diver course and all professional level ratings. EFR/React Right course can be completed in half a day. The course includes topics such as basic life support, CPR and rescue breathing, shock management, spinal injury, serious bleeding management and basic first aid procedures.
Course participants learn simple steps for emergency care and practice applying skills in a non-stressful learning environment.
Advanced Open Water Course
Are you already a certified diver and ready for the next step? The advanced open water course, also known as the Advanced Adventure Course, will allow you to explore deeper dive sites and will make you a more confident diver. The advanced diver course is designed to expose you to more challenging diving conditions and activities. The goal is to make you a better diver by increasing your confidence and independence as a recreational diver.
The advanced course consists of 5 dives over at least two days. The course is very much about diving and does not have the theory load of the open water course. It is all about learn by doing. You will explore the best parts of the Gili’s dive sites, under the supervision of one of our experienced instructors. The instructor will focus on your dive position, your buoyancy, fin-kick techniques and teach you how to minimise your air-consumption.
The Advanced Open Water Diver license results in qualification to dive down to 30 meters. Pre-book and receive a free Fun dive or an exclusive discount!
Advanced Dive Overview
During the Advanced Dive Course you will be able to choose 5 different speciality dives. The Advanced Dives you do during the Advanced Course can be used towards the equivalent speciality courses.
Deep
The Deep Adventure Dive is one of the core dives of the Advanced Course. As you learned during your open water course, when we go deeper than 18 meters, there are a number of extra factors we need to keep in mind and procedures to observe in order to stay safe.
The presence of your instructor offers security the first time you venture deep enough to experience Nitrogen Narcosis and increased air consumption. We will also try to illustrate to you what Nitrogen Narcoses feels like, and what increased pressure does to things such as color and air spaces. Getting certified to scuba dive to 30 meters will open up a whole new range of dive sites to explore. Around the Gili Islands, you will find better diving areas with marine life such as sharks at the deeper parts of the dive sites.
Once you have fallen in love with diving deep, you can continue with the Deep speciality. During this course, you will learn how to dive to a thrilling 40 meters deep.
Navigation
Another core dive in the Advanced Open Water course is the Navigation dive. Navigation is the adventure dive about skills of knowing where you are. It may seem like magic to you when your divemaster takes you on a long dive and finishes exactly back where you started. But it isn’t that. With the Navigation Dive and by continuing to use the navigation skills you learn during the course, you will gain a lot of confidence and will be able to find your way around any dive site using different navigation techniques.
Do you want to become a navigation hero who never gets lost? Continue with our Navigation Speciality.
Peak Performance Buoyancy
The better your buoyancy, the better your dive. The pure purpose of this adventure dive is to work on your buoyancy skills to the point you will notice a significant improvement in your air consumption. You will work on your dive position and fin-kicking, so you can glide through the water effortlessly.
Do you feel you need more practice? Or are you a photographer and want to get closer to your subject without disturbing the environment? Opt for the Perfect Buoyancy Speciality.
Drift Adventure Dive
We are fortunate here on Gili Trawangan to have many sites which are perfect for drift diving. If you have never done it before, you will probably find it quite exciting! The basic skills of current check, negative water entry, reef hook deployment, taking advantage of current, the difference in buddy procedures and surface marker buoy deployment are all covered.
Are you planning to dive in areas known for their currents, like Komodo National Park? Then the Drift Speciality is the perfect speciality course for you.
Adventure Night Dive
Why go scuba diving at night? Because it’s very exciting, and even more because we can! Also of course because there are a lot of different species active which you will only ever see at night. The different buddy procedures, entry/exit procedures, light handling and navigation skills required are covered in detail.
Have you gotten the nightdive bug? Continue with the Nightdive Speciality.
Search & Recovery Adventure Dive
Once dropped in the sea, things tend to stay lost. If you choose this adventure dive, we will show you some of the techniques for locating items and bringing them back to the surface. Good navigation skills are vital for success.
If you are a pro at finding things that are lost, the Search & Recovery Speciality is for you!
Underwater Photography
During this dive you will learn about composition, camera care, use of light framing, red balance and much more. We will also teach you some extra buoyancy skills required to significantly improve your underwater photos. It is recommended to have your own camera when you choose the Underwater Photography Adventure Dive.
Are you an aspiring underwater photographer? Come and learn how to become a pro from one of our underwater photographers. Contact us for more information.
Fish ID
Ever came back from a dive thinking; what was that fish? With this dive we will show you how to identify species, their habits and how to find the common names of a number of marine life. You will not only explore the vast array of fish species inhabiting the world's oceans, but also acquire the skills to identify them based on their distinctive body features, mouth shapes, tail structures, and behavioral traits.
Can’t get enough of our marine life? We offer a large variety of ECO specialities to choose from.
Wreck Adventure Dive
Wrecks are not just remnants of the past; they are vibrant ecosystems teeming with marine life. The procedures for diving on wrecks vary considerable from reef diving, chiefly because of the potential overhead environment. The Wreck Adventure Dive will highlight the most important safety aspects whilst you experience one of Gili Trawangan’s two wrecks.
During the Wreck Adventure Dive you are not allowed to enter a wreck. Are you interested in learning how to penetrate a wreck? Continue with the Wreck Speciality.
Intro to Nitrox Adventure Dive
We will explain the advantages of diving with Nitrox and how to calculate your increased bottom time with a dive computer. After the theory, you will breathe nitrox for a full dive. Your first dive on mixed gas. If you wanted to get certified as a Nitrox Diver at the same time, you could get these two licenses at one go just by adding some theory and an exam for the cost of 7.000.000 IDR for both!
How to become a certified scuba diver on Gili Trawangan
This world’s most popular dive course, often referred to as ‘PADI’, allows you to dive to 18 meters deep with a certified dive buddy. Our 2,5 day course is designed for complete beginners and taught by our experienced multilingual instructors. Our groups are kept small, with a maximum of 4, allowing our instructors to focus on your individual needs and ensure a safe and enjoyable learning environment.
The Open Water Diver course consists of three main parts:
Theory
This is where we explain to you the important aspects of diving; in person and through theory lessons on the SSI app. We will make every effort to break it up to keep things interesting.
Confined water training
We start out in our swimming pool at standing depth to get used to breathing underwater. Through the gradual introduction of basic skills, your confidence will increase surprisingly quickly. By the end of the confined water session you will find you can control your position and depth with confidence and have mastered the basic equipment skills.
Open Water dives
To complete the course we take you on 4 reef dives to the top dive sites on Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Your first two open water dives will be to a maximum of 12 meters. You will not only learn how to scuba dive, but you will also so a variety of amazing marine life during the open water diver course.
Discover Scuba Diving on Gili Trawangan
The program includes basic dive theory, a session in the swimming pool to get you comfortable, and an ocean dive with one of our experienced instructors. The confined water practice session is executed in one of our two swimming pools. The open water scuba dive that follows is done on one of many suitable dive sites for beginner level divers around the Gili Islands. The maximum depth of the dive in the ocean is 12 meters deep. The time spend in the ocean is dependable on how quickly you finish the air in the scuba tank, but is normally around 45 minutes.
We like to keep our group sizes very small, so there will no more than four divers per instructor. If you are travelling with a bigger group, there will be multiple scuba instructors to ensure a safe and enjoyable dive experience. Our instructor team covers a wide range of languages, so instructions are most likely available in your native language too!

Meet Ovan
I was apprehensive as I was taking my certification with just 130 dives under my belt. The Instructor Trainer Ovan immediately put me at ease; I was impressed by his experience and teaching quality while still maintaining his fun personality! After two intense weeks, I approached the final test with great confidence. I passed the certification exam with flying colors without any particular difficulty, and then I stayed on to work at Gili Divers dive center for 3 months.
I underwent instructor training on Gili Trawangan at Gili Divers shop with the legend Ovan (with over 10,000 dives in Indonesia), and what an experience it was! Firstly, learning from someone like Ovan, who knows the underwater world and teaching like no other, was truly enriching. I emerged from those two intense weeks of training with a lot of confidence and a desire to improve every day! Moreover, undergoing this training at Gili Divers, where everything is set up for a 5-star experience, was the best idea! A pool exclusively for our group, a boat for our group, dive sites protected and set up for teaching (buoys + ropes) – everything was perfect for learning under the best possible conditions!
I did my instructor training course (ITC) in Gili Divers and honestly it was the best choice possible. Ovan, our instructor trainer and Anne, our assistant instructor trainer were incredible and prepared us so well that the actual test seemed to be super easy.
The team makes you feel home, and is always happy to share knowledge and support you throughout the course until you finally succeed! Learning from that team pushes you to establish your standards as an instructor really high and can only make your future brighter.
I have made my ITC in Gili Divers with Ovan. It was one of the best decisions I could ever have made. Ovan is so passionate about what he does and you can clearly see that he loves to train new instructors. The course is well scheduled and it would give you enough practice to go to the exam. As well you will go through all the theory with him to be sure that everything is well understood and you can solve all the questions you can have.
I will recommend everyone to do the Instructor Training Course in Gili Divers not just because of the program, but also because of the facilities that it would offer you. They have 2 pools and boats, so you will have a lot of privacy during your course.
My ITC at Gili Divers and the Instructor Trainer Ovan were everything I could have wanted and imagined! Educational of course, but also full of anecdotes and examples of real-life experiences, which makes the course even more interesting and useful as an instructor later. Also full of practice of all the different parts, for example briefings and skills, which makes you gain important confidence and experience. And of course - so much FUN! I’m so thankful about doing my Instructor Training Course at Gili Divers and it made me qualified and ready to take on the instructor world!
