One of my concerns when coming to Asia was being able to keep up my veggie diet. I’m glad to say in reality it’s been super easy. Gili T is a small island but it’s filled with plenty of options from local dishes to our favorite western delights.

Every restaurant and local warung on the island offers vegetarian options but finding vegan food can be a bit harder. Luckily we have three delicious cafés to cater to these requirements. And honestly they are my favorite places to eat on the island!

Pituq Café is a cosy spot hidden away on the back street serving full range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. It’s on a 2-minute walk from the busy main street and still very central and easy to find. The bohemian inspired Café plays some beautifully relaxing music and offers a wide range of tasty and healthy drinks, snacks, sweets, all day breakfast and filling lunches.

Their vegan food is made fresh and local with inspiration from all over the world with a wide range of flavours for every palette. They also offer natural healing consultations, meditation, hair braiding and dreadlocks with profits going to support the less fortunate of the local area.

You’ll also find a book exchange, local spices and coffees for sale along with hand made jewellery. If it’s a truly peaceful and relaxing afternoon you’re looking for, go no further.

The Banyan Tree, one the most popular vegetarian restaurants on Gili Trawangan

The Banyan Tree, placed perfectly central on the main road with beautiful beachfront views from the front window or from the upstairs terrace. You have an option of sitting directly on the beach too. The Banyan Tree offers delicious raw vegan food and cakes, smoothie bowls, salads, local Indonesian dishes and much more! A stylish restaurant, perfect for an afternoon coffee and cake or your evening meal.

My third favorite is Kayu Café. This restaurant is located in the busy south east of the island and it is also a beach front. A paradise catering to all preferences from meat to vegetarian with a variety of vegan dishes to keep the menu broad and exciting. Kayu Café’s main aim is healthy and hearty meals. The perfect place for a tasty filling meal, with scrumptious cakes and delicate coffee to finish.

If it’s a more local taste you’re after be sure to visit the tiny local kitchens on every corner. Don’t let the appearance put you off, it is some of the most delicious vegetarian food you’ll find around. Don’t be afraid to ask for tofu and tempe in your curry or mie goreng. They will be more than happy to oblige and your food will be filling and moreish!

Enjoy your eating experience on Gili Trawangan, it’s my favorite part of each day!
